Instructor: John-Michael "J" Bills is a visual effects artist and designer, originally from Kansas City. Bills began his career in the late-1990's, doing stints upon graduation from the University of Kansas Film Program at the ABC and CBS affiliates in KC as a Graphic Designer. Upon moving to New York for a fresh start in the year 2000, Bills made the rounds as a freelance visual effects artist, working on projects for HBO, MTV, Sci-Fi Channel, Nickelodeon, The Mill, and Imaginary Forces, to name a few - eventually finding a home at NYC artist collective Psyop as a Compositor by day and teaching visual effects and motion graphics at the School of Visual Arts by night. Recently Bills moved on from NYC to take a position as a lead artist at Peter Jackson's award winning New Zealand studio Weta Digital, working on films such as the Lord of the Rings triology, King Kong, and currently James Cameron's forthcoming Avatar. Many of his techniques were showcased in Damian Allen's Apple Pro Training Series: Encyclopedia of Visual Effects, of which Bills contributed a significant amount of content. Bills is also an avid filmmaker and designer, recently contributing to several indy films and music videos in addition to producing his own shorts.
