Aperture: Photoshop Replacement or Enhancement?

Because of its powerful image editing tools, many people believe that Aperture can replace Photoshop. This segment provides you with an overview of Aperture's strengths and weaknesses, then answers the burning question: Can it replace Photoshop?

Power Photography Practices

At its heart, Aperture is optimized for managing Raw images. In this segment, you'll learn how to squeeze more quality from your camera by using power photography practices such as shooting in Raw format and working with 16-bit photos, then managing them effortlessly in Aperture.

Uploading and Importing

Transferring pictures from your camera is easy. But what do you do with all of those JPEGs and Raw files scattered throughout your hard drive or trapped in iPhoto? Here's how to corral your valuable images and house them safely in Aperture.

Maximizing Metadata

Aperture makes it easy to view and add metadata to your images. It comes standard with dozens of EXIF and IPTC tags that can be applied automatically during upload. You can then use this embedded information to sort and build specific albums.

Compare and Select

Photographers typically shoot multiple versions of a subject. Comparing these pictures and selecting the best is often a tedious process. Aperture's powerful compare and select tools transforms this task from dull to entertaining. In this segment you'll learn how to take advantage of Aperture's "stacks," digital loupe, and digital light table to easily choose the right shot from any sequence.

Backup and Archive

Finally, a photo workflow that includes easy-to-use archiving, even to multiple drives. Sleep better at night knowing that your day's images are backed up, safe and sound.

Image Processing

Aperture's powerful set of non-destructive image editing tools allows you to work on your Raw files and Jpegs alike. You can create and edit alternate versions without tapping extra disk space. Then if you need to, you can easily export into Photoshop for more complicated jobs.

Output Power Tips

Managing your photos is one thing, but sooner or later you need to share them with the world. Aperture provides you with just about every output option you'd ever need. From color-corrected prints, to customized contact sheets, to high-resolution book printing, to web publishing. In this session, you'll learn how to output like a pro.
